Can stay a week or more starting June How much time would you give to Taipei's best hits? Basic place to stay? Since I'm a culture whore I thought Tainan would be good, so how much time there? Place to stay?
Would also like to see some of the best scenery on the main island, I guess, but have read how it difficult to travel and see anything. I wouldn't stay more than 2 days in Tainan. One day might be enough. The old temples are almost all close to each other, so it's not difficult to go see one after another.
It's very fast to get between major cities such as Taipei and Tainan. However, I recommend paying cash for any tickets as if you use a credit card, it will actually be charged as a cash advance, NOT a charge, and you'll start to accrue interest from the moment of purchase until you fully pay off the entire credit card balance. You can see the highlights of Taipei in probably 3 days. I have no recommendations on where to stay as I splurged on a very nice hotel and most travelers here are looking for much cheaper places to stay.
I did not stay in Tainan but visited it on a day trip, so again, I have no recommendation on where to stay. While it would not be a bad place to live, it has little of interest to tourists and going there would just be a waste of your time and money on a 1 week trip.

I hope my brain still works although sometimes I question it.
